Egypt Day 2

On our second day in Egypt we stayed in Alexandria. Brad's mom graduated high school there so we thought it would be fun to go see it. We weren't sure if we were going to make it. As soon as you leave the port you are hounded by cabbies. We said we wanted to go to Schutz American School and they were all arguing over how to get there and who would take us. Once we got in the cab the driving there is crazy. They try to make a 2 lane road into 5 and go the wrong way on roundabouts. They use their horn all the time (our cabs sounded like a dead animal). We laughed when we saw a Chili's and McDonald's and were relieved when we saw the school! Brad just explained that his mom went there and asked if we could take pictures. They got the marketing director to come give us a tour. We thought it was great that she took the time to show us around.

The school has changed a lot and the area around the school has really grown but Barb, hopefully you will recognize a few things! We enjoyed getting to see where you went to school! They just changed the logo a couple years back. They had a contest with the students then brought in a graphic designer.

We headed back to the boat for lunch and nap then in the afternoon ventured out again to try to find a beach.

This doesn't do justice how crazy the driving was. It scared me a little just because Chase was on my lap and not in a car seat.

We dipped Chase's feet in the sea and he wasn't too impressed. It was just a little cold. He was sure a hit with the locals though. (Not quite sure how this picture got to be black and white)

Our cab driver was making me so mad. We settled on a price to go to the gardens and back for 2 hours. Well he kept adding things to the trip (when I kept asking to go back to the boat) then raised the price. He stopped at this little kids fair thing because he wanted Chase to do the rides. It thought it was disgusting and wanted to get out of there but we went along with it. Let me just tell you how good Chase got at putting hand sanitizer on. After every stop we would make him put some on and rub his hands together. He actually likes doing it now. If I get it out of his backpack he immediately puts his hands out to get some.

We finally made it back to the port area in time for a little shopping. I felt like we had personal shoppers everywhere we went. They hounded you - one guy followed us around for like 20 minutes. I hate shopping like that and bargaining. Brad doesn't mind though so we got some good deals.

Egypt Day 1

On our first day in Egypt we did a guided tour to Cairo to see the pyramids and a few other things. The bus ride there was long (3 hours). It was very hard for Chase to sit on our lap for that long and the bus was completely full so we couldn't even spread out with all our stuff. Oh well it was worth it. The first thing we did was get a camel ride. Brad and I went at the same time so I didn't get many good pictures. The camels are tall! We sit on them when they are sitting and when they stand up you really have to hold on!

A view of the city. It was really dirty, you could see dead animals in the water that they use to irrigate the fields. The houses were all unfinished, you get taxed less on an unfinished house and when your kids marry then you can build another level. I wish we would have gotten a picture to show you what I am talking about.

We also stopped by a Papryus store. I wasn't tempted at all especially after buying a rug. This was definitely more the tourist side of Egypt. The next day we ventured out into Alexandria on our own....

Turkey

I have been working on this post for 2 days now! This pictures have taken forever to upload!! Anyways, our stop in Turkey was one of our favorite. We took a tour through the cruise line because we wanted to see Ephesus (we ported in Izmir). It was so neat to walk the ruins and thinking about the church. We enjoyed reading Ephesians that night.

This is the bathroom. Apparently fresh water runs along the bottom and you bring your sponge with you to wipe. In the winter the marble would get very cold so the wealthy people would send their slaves ahead of them to warm up the seat. It was also a place to socialize. Look how close the holes are though.

The Library of Celsus in the background is the most famous sight. I can't imagine how much work it has taken to restore the ruins. Even though the main walkway is crowded with tourist we could almost picture it with the Ephesians getting on with their day. It was very bright that day and we loved the sun!

Where I am standing taking this picture is where the brothel is. They found a tunnel that ran from the library to the brothel.

The theater where Paul supposedly preached. Outside of this theater is where the silversmiths got mad at Paul for ruining their business of making idols (Acts 19).

At the end of the walking tour was a quick demonstration of what life was like. He is a street performer.

After seeing Ephesus we went to a Rug Warehouse. We got a demonstration on hand-woven rugs.

They were beautiful and I was sold! During this demonstration they just kept throwing out all different kinds of rugs. This little marketing ploy worked for me and we bought one. It was supposed to ship straight to our house but we haven't gotten it yet. Hopefully we will get it in the next few days and I can add a picture.

After our tour was over we still had a little bit of time so we walked down into the town of Izmir (Smyrna from the bible). We were hoping to do some more shopping (like my rug didn't cause enough damage) but didn't see much. Not all ports have a nice area in walking distance so we had to take advantage.

We decided to let Chase play a little. He did great on the tours but after a while he needs a break. Don't make fun of his hat, his blonde hair attracts a lot of attention so we made him wear it.

Next stop - Egypt!

We had many offers from cabbies to show us around for several hours. We fit all 7 of us and the cab driver - it was a little tight!

Our first stop was to head to the Acropolis to see the Parthenon. They are restoring it so there was a lot of scaffolding but cool to see none the less.

We only wish we could have seen more of Greece.
